Youth Power in the Global Year of Elections 2024

The global electoral tapestry is woven with innovative ideas, collaborative efforts, and unwavering commitment. Caleb Masusu highlights how young people can play a crucial role in the 2024 global elections by actively participating in the formal political process.

In the ever-evolving landscape of global politics, young people have risen to the forefront, leading movements and influencing elections. I recall highlighting this in my reflection on the impact of youth power in the Nigeria elections last year

Role of Young people in Shaping the Politics.

Last week, I had the privilege of collaborating with a diverse group of young people at Democracy Moves. This global network is dedicated to advocating for more participatory democracies in their respective countries. Restless Development supported them by hosting the Leadership Lab series focused on analysing the electoral landscape in 2024. Together, we brought together young policy makers from various parts of the world.

Leadership labs work to mobilise youth power on a global scale. These labs provide a virtual platform for our global youth Community of Action to delve into practical leadership strategies and ways to enhance youth civil society, foster stronger collaborations, and implement a power-shifting approach.

Global Elections in 2024.

As we approach the pivotal year of 2024, marked by elections in over 50 countries, and an anticipated  turnout of more than 2 billion voters. The learning from the lab provided a panoramic view of the challenges and opportunities shaping the global electoral tapestry.

Africa’s lively schedule of elections, managing power transitions and recovering from coups, reflects the development of multi-party systems as expressed by Dr. Mcdonald, the country director of Accountability Lab Zimbabwe. Lourdes Argueta, Secretary General – JuventudLAC, shed light on Latin America’s challenges, from autocratic leaders to widespread protests, painting a picture of a region grappling with diverse issues. The influence of artificial intelligence on global elections underscores the complex intersection of technology and democracy, a topic that Restless Development will be unpacking at the upcoming Summit for Democracy.

The global context, as highlighted by the World Economic Forum, identifies 2024 as a historic election year, with over 2 billion voters expected to take part in the electoral process across 50 countries. Geopolitical volatility emerges as a significant risk, emphasising the interconnectedness of political events on a global scale.

The recent GOP primary debate in the United States provided a glimpse into the generational gap within political parties as candidates grapple with issues like climate change and abortion. However, the global youth perspective transcends these borders, party lines and offers a glimpse into the evolving dynamics of political engagement.

Youth Leadership Labs and the election.

Reflecting on the Youth Leadership Lab experience, it is clear that the global electoral stage is a vibrant tapestry woven with the aspirations of young leaders. It cements the fact that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the architects of change in the present.

Amid the 2024 elections, the youth emerge to be a potential influence. They are actively shaping the future of their country and international landscape. They understand the challenges and opportunities of 2024 and are now partaking in a collective effort to nurture fair and inclusive democracies.

The global electoral tapestry is woven with the innovative ideas, collaborative efforts, and unwavering commitment where the voice of all individuals, particularly the youth, resound more powerful than before.
