Youth mental health is a huge factor in society. Nearly a quarter of young people report that they are suffering from mental health problems across the UK – and those numbers are still increasing.
In 2023, one in five children and young people aged eight to 25 had a probable mental health condition. This number has been rising since 2017, most notably in the 17-19 age group – YoungMinds
Mental health is an important factor in life at all ages but is even more important in young people as it is a time in their life which shapes how they view themselves and their future.
Getting out of doors more regularly could be part of the answer to addressing this issue.
Benefits of Nature
There is research to prove that being outdoors in nature is beneficial to our mental health.
A 2021 Natural England study found 85 per cent of young people agree being in nature makes them very happy. Furthermore, those who spend time outside at least once a week are more likely to report ‘very high’ levels of happiness – UK Youth
Organisational Work In the Youth Mental Health Industry
An organisation called Balbirnie’s Future Foundation Nature Pioneers collaborates and works together with different youth projects across their local area in Fife to help improve the mental health of young people by doing outdoor nature improvement activities in their local parks. They work with young people aged 14-25 who struggle with mental health.
Riley Laing, one of the young people involved in the organisation said, “When I’ve been outside and around people, I’m able to enjoy being outdoors and appreciate nature, which has improved my wellbeing.”
